Australia loses a man after a whale strikes a boat

According to police, a whale struck a boat in Australia, killing one man and injuring another.

In the waters off La Perouse, 14 kilometers (nine miles) south-east of Sydney, the guys were on a fishing trip when their boat was struck.

The alert was activated when the vessel was noticed circling and empty.

A state minister for New South Wales described the incident as "an absolute freak accident" because whale deaths in the area are uncommon.

According to police, the boat tilted as a result of the suspected collision, throwing both men overboard.

Acting Superintendent of the Water Police Siobhan Munro said, "Early reports indicate that a whale may have breached near the boat or on to the boat," adding that she had never witnessed a situation like this before.

The 61-year-old man was discovered unresponsive and passed away, according to authorities.

The 53-year-old skipper is in a stable condition at the hospital after being plucked from the ocean.

The coastline of Australia is home to 20 lesser and 10 larger species of whales. Which species was involved in the crash on Saturday is yet unclear.
