More than a thousand people died in road accidents caused by the use of mobile phones: report

 



The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has released the report titled 'Road Accidents in India - 2021'.

According to the report titled 'Road Accidents in India-2021' by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), a total of 1,997 road accidents occurred due to use of mobile phones while driving in 2021.

The report, quoting news agency PTI, said that 1,040 people lost their lives in these road accidents.

The data further states that 555 road accidents took place due to red light jumping, while 222 people lost their lives in 2021.

According to data released by the road ministry, the total number of accidents and deaths due to in 2021 were 3,625 and 1,481, respectively, PTI reported.

The Committee noted that road accidents are multi-hazardous and require multi-pronged measures to mitigate the problems through concerted efforts of all agencies, both of the Central Government and State Governments.

The report states that the road ministry has devised a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety based on education, engineering (both road and vehicular), enforcement and emergency care.

A total of 4,12,432 road accidents took place in 2021, in which 1,53,972 people lost their lives, while 3,84,448 people were injured.

This report is based on data/ information received from police departments of States/UTs collected on calendar year basis in standardized formats provided by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) under Asia Pacific Road Accidents Is. Data (APRAD) Base Project.

It consists of ten sections and includes information related to road accidents in terms of road length and vehicle population.

The Ministry along with relevant organizations and stakeholders has formulated a multi-pronged strategy to address the issue of road safety based on education, engineering (both road and vehicular), enforcement and emergency care.
