 Cauvery dispute: The Tamil Nadu Assembly approves a motion ordering the Karnataka government to provide water in accordance with CWMA orders

On October 9, the Tamil Nadu Assembly approved a resolution ordering the Karnataka government to transfer Cauvery river waters into the state in accordance with the directive given by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).

On behalf of the DMK administration in power, Chief Minister MK Stalin moved the motion. All state parties, including the Congress, the AIADMK, and the BJP, offered their support, resulting in its unanimous passage.

The Cauvery Water Management Committee ordered the Karnataka government to deliver 3,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu between September 28 and October 15, and the CWMA affirmed that ruling on September 29.

Due to the state's inadequate rainfall, the Congress-led administration in Karnataka has chosen not to abide by the directive.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah allegedly remarked, "The rainfall was below normal in the period between June and August, which has stressed the available water resources," before the CWMA on September 29. According to Karnataka government authorities, meeting the state's citizens' drinking water needs is a top concern.

Last month, Siddaramaiah also said that, if necessary, his administration will go before the Supreme Court to contest the CWMA ruling. In a distress year, when Monsoon rainfall is below average, his administration has urged that the water-sharing tribunal should develop a new formula for distributing all inter-state river resources.

Pro-Kannada organizations and farmer organizations in Karnataka have increased their pressure on the state government and are pleading with the chief minister to do all in his power to limit the discharge of Cauvery waters to the neighboring state.

On September 26, the demonstrators in Bengaluru declared a bandh, and on September 29, the whole state was shut down. An October 10 roadblock of the National Highway at the Hoskote toll in Bengaluru has been announced by Vatal Nagaraj, a pro-Kannada group.
