General Elections in Pakistan may not take place until March of the following year, according to a minister.

Islamabad: According to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, the country's general elections can be postponed until March of 2019 after the Council of Common Interests (CCI) approved the new census, necessitating new constituency delineation by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), according to Geo News.

The security czar told Geo News on Monday that polls will take place in the third or first week of March if constituency delimitation was completed.

After the CCI meeting on Saturday "unanimously" authorised the 2023 headcount, the ECP is required to hold the forthcoming general elections, which were previously slated for October or November this year.

According to a statement issued following the meeting, the four chief ministers and the representatives of all political parties agreed to approve the census for 2023.

Sanaullah said, "I believe holding fresh delimitation is a constitutional obligation," in reference to the CCI judgement.

He argued that it is against the Constitution to base two general elections on the results of one census.

He said that the Constitution also required that new constituency delineations take place following the formal notification of the results of the next census.

Additionally, he acknowledged that political parties have voiced a number of concerns regarding the findings of the census in 2023.

Sanaullah stated that no choice has been made for the temporary chief executive when asked about the caretaker prime minister's appointment, according to a report from Geo News.

Kamran Tessori, the governor of Sindh, has been suggested for the position by the MQM-P, the federal minister said, adding that another coalition member, the PPP, "also intended to give one or two names."

He stated that by tomorrow (Tuesday), the interim prime minister's official name would be revealed.

The National Assembly will be prematurely dissolved on August 9 by the PDM-led government, prompting the ECP to hold elections in 90 days rather than 60 if the legislature finishes its constitutional term on August 12, according to Geo News.

The former finance minister Hafeez Shaikh's name was previously disclosed by Sanaullah as being on the short list for the position of caretaker prime minister. The security czar said that a former Supreme Court judge's name is also on the list of applicants for the coveted position while speaking on Geo News' "Naya Pakistan" show.

The interim prime minister's name would be decided upon by Tuesday or Wednesday (August 8 or 9) of this week, he added.
