The source said that Ms. Vaughan was hurt by the propeller of the sailing boat before being tossed into the lake and drowning. Although she was hauled from the ocean onto a dock, by the time rescue personnel came, she had already been declared dead.

Mike White, Ms. Vaughan's husband, had wounds to his arms and a shoulder that is dis but their two children, ages 12 and 8, who saw the horrible accident but were unharmed, were kept in a terrible state of shock.

The news that Adrienne Vaughan, president of Bloomsbury USA, passed suddenly on Thursday as a result of injuries sustained in an Italian boating accident is confirmed by Bloomsbury Publishing with great sadness.

Her spouse and two children lived, according to a statement from the publishing business.

"Adrienne's passing is a tragic loss. America has expanded to become our biggest market since she was named President of Bloomsbury USA three years ago, it said.

Why the speedboat Ms. Vaughan and her family were riding in struck the sailboat is unknown. The death of the woman is the subject of an inquiry by Italian prosecutors in Salerno.

The 30-year-old speedboat captain had shattered ribs and a broken pelvis, according to The Guardian. His initial toxicology findings revealed that he had more alcohol in his system than was permitted by law. Additional drug testing results will be made public in Italy on Friday afternoon.

On the other hand, according to CNN, the skipper of the sailing boat did not test positive for any drugs and is not under investigation. The Salerno Port Authority has impounded both vessels until it conducts its inquiry.

The American division of the British publishing company that released "Harry Potter" in the UK was led by Adrienne Vaughan. She obtained her MBA from NYU Business School in 2007, according to the company's website, and she formerly headed Marvel Press at Disney Publishing Worldwide.
