Prior to AEK Athens and Dinamo Zagreb's UEFA Champions League qualifying third-round encounter on Monday night, a brawl between fans broke out.

In violent skirmishes outside of Athens, a Greek football fan was fatally stabbed, according to police. 96 individuals were detained following the violent altercation.

Police said the 22-year-old male was taken from the stadium in a nearby neighbourhood to an Athens hospital, where he later passed away. Prior to the third-round match among the hosts, AEK Athens, and Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia, a brawl between fans broke out Monday evening.

Greek police said that "a serious incident" had occurred outside the Nea Filadelfia stadium. "A young Greek man was stabbed to death, and six other injured people are being treated at the hospital." Three Greeks and five Croats are among the eight injured individuals.

According to public television station ERT, those harmed include a young person who received medical treatment after being hit in the head by a stone.

The arrestees will appear before the state prosecutor on Tuesday, according to the Greek news agency ANA, which reported that an inquiry had been launched. Thessaloniki in northern Greece's Alkis Kampanos, 19, was murdered in a brawl between Aris Thessaloniki and PAOK supporters in February 2022. Seven people were convicted guilty of his murder last month and given life sentences. For complicity, five additional people were given sentences totaling more than 19 years. It was the third fatality brought on by fan violence in Thessaloniki alone during a three-year span.

At 1845 GMT on Tuesday, AEK Athens will play host to Dinamo Zagreb in a Champions League encounter.
