Indian teen missing from US home for over 3 weeks, fears father will be fired, deported

Tanvi Marupalli, 14, went missing from her home in the US state of Arkansas more than three weeks ago. Police believe she may have fled fearing leaving the US as her father faced the prospect of being laid off amid layoffs in the tech industry.

In an era of layoffs, many immigrants and workers using visas have become concerned about job security. As thousands have been made redundant, they have been left to find new jobs on employment-based visas, while others face the prospect of deportation.

Against this backdrop, 14-year-old Tanvi Marupalli went missing from her home in the US state of Arkansas more than three weeks ago. Police believe she may have fled fearing leaving the US as her father faced the prospect of being laid off amid layoffs in the tech industry.

Her parents have also flagged the family's tenuous immigrant status, noting that they have so far been unable to acquire citizenship – despite having legally lived and worked in the US for many years.

Tanvi's father Pawan Roy Marupalli faced the prospect of losing his job earlier this year - a sequence of events that his daughter had already seen happen to her mother. Sridevi Edara was forced to return to India after losing her job and reapply for a dependent visa.

Pawan recalled giving him the advice, "I said... first let you and your mother go back to India, let me figure out how the system works, get a proper job and then bring you back." Call."

According to a PTI report, Tanvi did not react well, wondering why she should go there.

It is not yet clear where Tanvi could be and in what condition. While his family is offering a US$5,000 reward, the community and CPD continue their search. Officials said they have also asked the US Marshals Service and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to cooperate with the investigation.
