Covid-19: Omicron, sub-lineage predominant in India for last one week

Worldwide, 8,000 to 9,000 people are dying from this infection every week.

• Globally, the genomic profile of COVID-19 has undergone several changes. It started with BA.1 and BA.2 and later came to dominate many sub-lineages of Omicron around the world.

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics (INSACOG) has raised concerns about the rise in Covid-19 cases. It said the Omicron variant of the coronavirus and its sub-lineages continue to predominate in the country. "BA.2 and its descendants, in particular, BA.2.75, have been mostly detected over the past week in various parts of India," INSACOG said on Sunday.

Earlier in October, it was revealed that over 90% of the genome-sequenced Covid samples in Delhi in July and August were found with the BA.2 variant of the virus.

Globally, the genomic profile of COVID-19 has undergone several changes. It started with BA.1 and BA.2 and later came to dominate many sub-lineages of Omicron around the world. There is a rapid change in the sub-lineage that is circulating in the country. While scientists are studying the severity profile of the virus.

Recently, WHO Chief Scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan said that some countries may see "another wave of infections" with the XBB subvariant of Omicron.

"There are over 300 subtypes of Omicron. I think the one that's related right now is XBB, which is a recombinant virus. We've seen some recombinant viruses before. It's very immunosuppressive, which means it's antibodies. So little that we could see another wave of infections in some countries because of XBB," she said.

He said that COVID-19 remains a public health emergency of international concern. On October 20, Swaminathan said that 8,000 to 9,000 people are dying from the infection every week around the world. "So we haven't said that the pandemic is over, which means that all precautions and equipment have been continued. The good thing is that we now have many tools and most importantly vaccines."

Meanwhile, India recorded 1,994 cases of Kovid on Sunday. The total number of active cases of infection has come down to 23,432. India has registered a decline of 611 cases in the active caseload in a span of 24 hours.

According to the data of the Union Health Ministry, so far 219.55 crore Kovid vaccine doses have been given to the beneficiaries across the country.
