NEET test row: CEO of Physics Wallah petitions SC against 1,500 candidates' unfair grace marks

Amidst claims that the paper was leaked, the SC on Tuesday sent notice to the NTA and the Center about a plea to annul the results of the NEET-UG 2024, a competitive admission exam for undergraduate medical programs.

Alakh Pandey, the chief executive of Physics Wallah, has petitioned the Supreme Court (SC) to stop the National Testing Agency (NTA) from randomly giving at least 1,500 candidates grace marks in the NEET UG 2024 test. On June 12, the issue is anticipated to be heard.

The CEO of an edtech company located in Noida has accused the agency of being ineffective in communicating the algorithm used to award students with grace marks.  According to Pandey, his team has gathered signatures from over 20,000 pupils, demonstrating unequivocally that at least 1,500 individuals received random grades in the range of 70 to 80.

Amidst claims that the paper was leaked, the SC on Tuesday sent notice to the NTA and the Center on an additional plea to annul the results of the NEET-UG 2024, a competitive entrance exam for undergraduate medical programs.

A panel consisting of justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah said on June 11 that "the sanctity of the exam has been affected, so we need answers." But instead of stopping the counseling, the judge postponed the matter until July 8.

"The case that was mentioned on June 11 was submitted prior to the findings being announced on June 1. Our petition has concerns about the process used, the grace mark system, complete openness in the sharing of all information, etc. Pandey told Moneycontrol, "My lawyers are working to get it listed tomorrow, and we will bring up our concerns regarding NTA's continuing actions before the Hon'ble Court."

Our request is a little bit unusual. We are contesting the grace marks that were given arbitrarily. The court has said that it would consider our case together with the others, but it is quite apparent that the counseling process will not be postponed at this time, according to Physics Wallah's attorney, J Sai Deepak.

The two pleaded with the supreme court to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing the students' great anguish and uncertainty.

Pandey has asked the court to appoint an impartial, highly-qualified committee to conduct a comprehensive probe of the NEET UG 2024 test.

They contended that the intricacies and anomalies that have undermined the exam's legitimacy can only be found via a thorough investigation. In addition, they asked the court to take into account retaking the NEET test in the event that the inquiry validates the reported anomalies and inconsistencies.

The situation

The petition, which was submitted on June 1st, is a result of an investigation by the Bihar police into the purported exam paper leak. Thousands of students are vying for a small number of places in this examination.

The problem was exacerbated on June 4 when the test results were released. Suspicions of anomalies were raised when six students from the same test center got a perfect 720, out of a total of 67 pupils.

Numerous students demonstrated in Delhi on June 10 and called for an inquiry into the purported anomalies. Regarding grace marks and alleged test manipulation, NTA is under criticism. A four-person panel appointed by the education ministry will examine the grace marks given to over 1,500 applicants. Students claim that 67 students shared the top place because of grace marks.

To protect the integrity of the admission test system, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union vice-president Avijit Ghosh demanded an impartial and open probe. A number of groups are worried that NEET, which has encountered opposition in the past in areas like Tamil Nadu, may be jeopardized.
