French cop detained after a 19-year-old is said to have been shot dead

Prosecutors claimed that a 19-year-old male was shot and killed while attempting to evade a traffic check for speeding, and that French police officer is now being questioned about the incident. According to a statement from state prosecutor Pierre-Yves Marot, the victim was one of three persons in the vehicle when police attempted to stop them late on Sunday in the Normandy region of western France, close to Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. According to the statement, the motorist first refused to stop and carried on driving until a second police vehicle pulled up and stopped him. Then, it said, all three of the car's passengers made an effort to escape on foot.

According to the prosecutor's office, one person got away, one was taken into custody, and one was reportedly shot in the chest by an officer. The victim's identity is unknown. According to statements obtained by the AFP news agency, "the third person, a 19-year-old from Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, was questioned by officers from the second patrol as well as knocked into one them while trying to flee." The statement continued, "The officer then used a stun gun" while another pulled out and "used her service weapon, fatally striking him in the chest."

The internal affairs division of police regulator IGPN was holding the officer on Monday night in preparation for interrogation. It occurs about a year after widespread and violent riots erupted across France in response to the killing of a 17-year-old during a traffic check in the Nanterre neighborhood of Paris. A cop was accused of killing someone.
