Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' of Nepal won a vote of trust with Parliament on Monday, his fourth in 18 months in power, despite protests from the major opposition Nepali Congress, which chose not to participate in the vote.

With 157 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives, Prachanda, 69, a former guerrilla commander from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), the third-largest party in the HoR, was elected to the House.

158 legislators participated in the voting process overall. The major opposition Nepali Congress delayed the session by not participating in the vote and by chanting anti-Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane shouts. Lamichhane is suspected of embezzling cooperative money. One member of the HoR did not change.

Since Prachanda gained a majority in the Parliament, Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire declared that he had won the floor test.

The Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), a coalition partner, withdrew its support for his administration last week and left the partnership, days before the elections.

For the government to win the vote of confidence, at least 138 votes were needed.   The Nepali Congress, which has been calling for the creation of a parliamentary investigative committee to look into Lamichhane's alleged role in the scheme, produced obstacles earlier, forcing the vote to be postponed.

Since taking office as prime minister in December 2022, Prachanda has requested a vote of confidence from the House four times in less time.

A prime minister must conduct a vote of confidence in accordance with constitutional procedures if an ally withdraws support for the current coalition.   Prime Minister Dahal received a vote of confidence for the third time in a row earlier on March 13.

A dispute over supporting the major opposition party's presidential candidate caused the CPN-UML, headed by former prime minister KP Sharma Oli, to withdraw its support for the Prachanda-led administration last year, putting Prachanda to the test.
