Price of Rice: Non-Basmati rice is expected to become less expensive as a result of the Modi government's initiatives. Pulses will become less expensive in tandem with rice costs. In the last two years, rice prices had gone up by 12%.

The Center-led Modi administration has begun to take action to lower the price of non-Basmati rice on the domestic market. Associations representing the rice sector have been directed by the government to reduce prices to the lowest possible level. The price of rice will probably go down as a result. Pulses will become less expensive in tandem with rice costs. In the last two years, rice prices had gone up by 12%.

In light of this, Secretary of the Food and Public Distribution Department Sanjeev Chopra met with important figures from the non-Basmati rice processing sector and requested that they take action to lower the costs to a fair level. He recommended that the trade groups call a meeting of their members and make sure that the retail prices were lowered right away. The cause for the rise in rice prices despite a healthy crop and the export prohibition were also examined, with a focus on dealing with profiteering firmly.

Sufficient supply of superior grade rice

The rice processing sector has been advised by Food Corporation of India (FCI) that there is a sufficient supply of high-quality rice in store. The Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) is being used to sell it, with a reserve price of Rs 29 per kilogram. Tradesmen may purchase rice from FCI under the Open Market Sale Scheme and resell it to customers for a fair profit margin.

supplying Africa and Asia

Since September 2022 and July 2023, when the export of broken variety and non-Basmati white rice was prohibited, India has been providing rice to its important allies in Asia and Africa. The purpose of this limitation is to keep pricing under control. The export of 2.77 million tonnes (MT) of non-Basmati white rice to 14 significant Asian and African nations, including Singapore, Nepal, Malaysia, and the Philippines, has also received approval from the central government in recent months.

Moreover, toor dal will cost less.

Tur dal prices would drop by almost 18% by February as a result of improved pulse supply and decreased demand. In November, toor dal was offered for Rs 160 per kilogram. Now that the price has dropped, each kilogram will cost Rs 130. Because of the decrease in output, prices have gone up since last year.

December 18 saw a Rs 2.5 decrease in pricing. In actuality, Australia, Canada, Russia, and Mozambique are the importers of pulses. In order to allow costs to decrease, the government also lifted port restrictions and the minimum import prices on December 8.
