Elon Musk dismissed diversity, equality, and inclusion as "buzz words" in spite of Tesla's attempts to advance these ideas. The California Civil Rights Agency filed a lawsuit against Tesla in February 2022, alleging "rampant racism" against black employees at the company's Fremont manufacturing. Additionally, in September, Tesla was sued by the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for "severe or pervasive racial harassment" of its black employees.


In their impact report, Tesla said that "inclusion is everyone's responsibility." "Development, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles are introduced to employees during onboarding, and they are encouraged to join Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), which are led by people who are passionate about building a strong sense of community within Tesla."
