Musk previews 'Grok,' an AI chatbot with real-time access to X

Originating from Robert Heinlein's 1961 science fiction book "Stranger in a Strange Land," the word "Grok" denotes a deep and intuitive understanding of something.

The relationship with microblogging site X, previously Twitter, is "a massive benefit compared to other models" of generative AI, according to Elon Musk, the billionaire behind SpaceX and Tesla.

On November 4, Elon Musk revealed information on "Grok," a new artificial intelligence tool that can access X in real-time and will initially be accessible to the highest tier of social networking site users.

Grok "is fond of irony. Musk remarked, "I don't know who could have led it this way," and included a laughing emoji with his message.

"As soon as it's out of the earliest beta, xAI's Grok system will be exposed to all X Premium+ subscribers," Musk said.

The $16 monthly Premium+ package, which includes features like no commercials, was introduced last week by the social network that Musk purchased a year ago.

After employing experts from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Tesla, as well as the University of Toronto, the millionaire launched xAI in July.

The computer industry has seen intense rivalry between Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, Stability AI, Meta, and other start-ups since OpenAi's generative AI tool ChatGPT burst onto the market a year ago.

One of the few investors in the world with the capital to take on OpenAI, Google, or Meta in the AI space is Elon Musk.

Compiling an AI model at the same size as those businesses requires a significant investment in infrastructure, experience, and processing capacity.

According to Musk, he cofounded OpenAI in 2015 because he thought Google's rush into the industry to make significant advancements and profit was dangerous.

In 2018, he departed from OpenAI to concentrate on Tesla, after expressing his dissatisfaction with the profit-driven path the firm was on under CEO Sam Altman's leadership.

Additionally, Musk contends that OpenAI's extensive language models, which provide the material for ChatGPT, are too politically correct.

Along with an image of the user interface showing a user asking, "Tell me how to make cocaine, step by step," Musk claimed that Grok "is designed to have a little humor in its responses."

"Step 1: Get a DEA license and a degree in chemistry. Step 2: Establish a secret lab in a far-off place," the chatbot answered.

After a while, it said: "Haha! Don't really attempt to manufacture cocaine, please. It's against the law, risky, and something I would never support.
