CJI Chandrachud: I do not want the Supreme Court to become into a "tarikh-pe-tarikh" court

The CJI brought up the problem of attorneys requesting adjournments in new cases at the beginning of the day's hearings, stating that in the previous two months, advocates had submitted postponement slips in 3,688 cases.

India's Chief Justice, D Y Chandrachud, asked attorneys not to ask for adjournments in new cases on Friday, stating that he does not want the Supreme Court to become into a "tarikh-pe-tarikh" court.

The CJI brought up the problem of attorneys requesting adjournments in new cases at the beginning of the day's hearings, stating that in the previous two months, advocates had submitted postponement slips in 3,688 cases.

"Please do not submit the adjournment slips unless absolutely required...Together with justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, the CJI said, "I are not interested in this court to be a tarikh-pe-tarikh' court."

A well-known Sunny Deol line from the Bollywood film "Damini" was "Tarikh-pe-Tarikh" (continuous adjournments), in which the actor bemoaned the practice of judicial adjournments. The CJI said that the time interval between the filing of new issues in the highest court and their listing has been greatly shortened thanks to the support of the attorneys' groups.

But he regretted that after being listed before the benches, attorneys request adjournments, sending a very negative message to the outside world. "I've seen that there is a decrease in the time between submitting and listing.

Without the assistance of the Supreme Court Advocates-on Record Association (SCAORA) as well as the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), we would not have been able to do this," the Chief Justice said.

"We have 178 continuance slips for November 3. The CJI said, "This defeats about the very intent of expediting the case. Since October, 150 adjournment slips have been there for each strange day, and from September to October, 3,688 intermission slips were circulated."
