An Australian assault has left an Indian-origin student in a coma: report
The unnamed student is in the neighborhood of twenty years old. He is enrolled in the University of Tasmania's master's program.
Melbourne: A media report states that an Australian student of Indian descent was assaulted and is now in a medically induced coma. A suspect has been arrested and charged with criminal assault.
The unnamed student is in the neighborhood of twenty years old. The University of Tasmania is where he is pursuing his master's degree.
According to the Sydney-based Special Broadcasting Service, the victim experienced "extradural bleeding" that resulted in his brain moving, and the occurrence happened on November 5 at a facility in Tasmania.
The sources state that he had to have many hours of brain surgery after his right lung collapsed.
Shortly after the altercation, police arrested Lena Valley resident Benjamin Dodge Collings, 25, and charged him with Criminal Code assault, a penalty that carries a maximum punishment of 21 years in prison.
Judges set bail for Collings, who was scheduled to appear in court on December 4 to answer to accusations of assault, giving a fake address and identity, obstructing a police officer, and other driving offenses.
Ben Wild, the communications director at the University of Tasmania, confirmed that the organization was informed of the occurrence.
Ben Wild said that the institution is in constant communication with the student's family and is offering a complicated case with interpreters, connections, accommodations, and other assistance when asked what steps they have made to help the student during this trying time. A case manager has been assigned.
"The matter has also gone throughout the court system and we are very limited in what we can say," he said.
