After an alleged incident in Australia, an Indian student is in a coma
Following an alleged assault in Australia earlier this month, an Indian student earning a master's degree at the University of Tasmania is in a medically induced coma.
The incident occurred at about 4:20 a.m. on November 5 at a campus in Tasmania, and the 20-year-old student was rushed to the Royal Hobart Hospital soon after, according to a report from Sydney-based broadcaster SBS.
According to reports, his right lung collapsed, necessitating many hours of brain surgery.
Benjamin Dodge Collings, 25, was arrested by police shortly after the event and charged with criminal code assault, a felony with a potential penalty of 21 years in jail.
A magistrate granted Collings bail, and he is expected back in court on December 4.
There was no proof that the crime was motivated by race, the police informed SBS Hindi.
Germanjit Singh Gill, a local, said on the Facebook page "Indians in Tasmania" that "the man charged has been discharged on bail while the poor man continues to fight for his life."
We're utilizing the community's support to assist the victim, but we can't even ask questions since someone assaulted our brother without cause, Gill added.
According to the victim's acquaintances, his Assamese family lacked a passport that allowed them to enter Australia.
According to SBS Hindi, Ben Wild, the media director at the University of Tasmania, the family is regularly contacted by the university and a case manager has been appointed to help with translation, networking, lodging, and other needs.
"The matter has also gone though the court system and we are very limited in what we can say," he said.
