For the third year in a row, Dr. Santosh G. Honavar has taken the top spot among researchers in ophthalmology in India. He is the Honorary Secretary of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), Director of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery and Ocular Oncology at the Centre for Sight Eye Hospital in Hyderabad, former Associate Director of the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, and the former Editor of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology. According on the effect of their research in 2022, the top 2% of researchers worldwide were included in the rankings for the year 2023, which were released by a panel of experts from Stanford University and Elsevier.



 

Dr. Honavar is a well-known ophthalmologist who specializes in treating eye cancers. For his distinguished career, he has received awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Government of India, including the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award. The greatest honor given by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the UK, the Honorary Fellowship, has only been awarded to one ophthalmologist from the Indian subcontinent. Based on his lifetime contributions to the discipline, Dr. Santosh G. Honavar is also ranked second on the Stanford List.

 

Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, the founder and chairman of the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, tops the list of ophthalmology researchers in India for career-long effect. Dr. Rao, a renowned ophthalmologist in India, has received the Padma Shri award in recognition of his exceptional accomplishments. Additionally, he played a crucial role in the worldwide effort to end preventable blindness as the former Secretary-General and Chair of the Board of the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness. Additionally, Dr. Rao was honored by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery with induction into the Ophthalmology Hall of Fame.

 

The AIOS president, Dr. Harbansh Lal, congratulated the Indian researchers who were named to the Stanford list. In order to encourage and foster the research potential of Indian ophthalmologists, he emphasized AIOS's dedication to supporting Indian research via its journals, scientific endeavors, and research. He expressed hope that other young Indian ophthalmologists will soon make their mark on the Stanford list.

 

In terms of the significance of their research in 2022, forty Indian ophthalmologists are in the top 2% of researchers worldwide. According on career-long impact, there are 21 Indian ophthalmologists in the top 2% of researchers worldwide. 



The top 10 Indian ophthalmologists on the Stanford list for 2023 are: 

 

Santosh G. Honavar is first, followed by Swathi Kaliki, Philip Aloysius Thomas, Murthy G. V. S., Savitri Sharma, Mohammad Javed Ali, and Swati Sharma. Gullapalli N. Rao, Rohit Shetty, Virender S. Sangwan, and Namrata Sharma round out the list. 

 

The top 10 items on the Stanford 2023 list for influence over a lifetime are: 

 

Gullapalli N. Rao, Santosh G. Honavar, Philip Aloysius Thomas, Virender S. Sangwan, Balasubramanian D., Savitri Sharma, Muthiah Srinivasan, and others are listed in alphabetical order. Amod Gupta, G. V. S. Murthy, and Prashant Garg round out the top ten.
