The National Medical Commission (NMC) granted approval for the admission of 100 MBBS students beginning with the academic year 2023–2024 at NIMSR, Kohima, which is affiliated with Nagaland University, in April 2023.


The Nagaland Institute of the Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), the first medical college in the northeastern state, was opened by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on October 14 in Kohima, according to news agency PTI.




The NIMSR is a research center as well as a medical college, Mandaviya emphasized.


"It will not only fulfill the intended use of imparting medical education but it will additionally tackle the health problems of the Naga people," he said.


In a statement underscoring the Centre's dedication to enhancing medical education in India, Mandaviya said that in only nine years, there had been a rise in MBBS seats from 64,000 to 1.6 lakh. In a similar vein, PG seats have increased by 50% in the last nine years.


He said that medical students shouldn't confine their research to their own country. He said that the Center has initiated foreign language classes in several medical education institutions to provide students an advantage in seeking employment overseas. "We must capitalize on opportunities abroad as well," he said.


He said that the BJP-led Center is working to improve the country's medical, nursing, and pharmacy education as part of its overall development and growth strategy.


"The aim is to ensure that every citizen of India can get access to healthcare at a reasonable price across the country," stated the minister.


In addition to this, he emphasized the nationwide development of "Jan aushadhi kendras" to increase everyone's access to high-quality, low-cost medications.

It said that on September 1st, after their induction program, 85 MBBS students from Nagaland and six from the all-India seats were accepted to the NIMSR and enrolled in MBBS programs.


It was a momentous day for the people of Nagaland, according to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, as a long-cherished ambition of theirs was realized. The chief minister congratulated the Union government for resolutely pursuing the project, saying that having a medical college in their state was a long-cherished goal of the Naga people.


Rio said that she believed the NIMSR would one day become a center of excellence and that it would assist the state improve its secondary and tertiary healthcare.
