Has the severity of dengue illness increased after Covid? It is said that

According to a recent study, the COVID-19 pandemic may have accelerated the clinical development of dengue, a common vector-borne illness in the nation.

An investigation titled "SARS-CoV-2 antibodies cross-react and enhance dengue infection" was conducted by a group at the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI), which is part of the department of biotechnology for the federal government.

According to the findings, dengue virus serotype DENV-2 may cross-react with antibodies from SARS-CoV-2 infection or experimental vaccination in animals, possibly boosting dengue infection in animal cells.

According to the study, "This is the first study to show that anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies can cross-react with DENV-2 (dengue virus 2) and can enhance its infection through a antibody-dependent (the capacity of antibodies from a previous infection to help a virus infect more cells than it would have on its own)."

These results have ramifications for SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development and distribution plans in dengue-endemic areas, it continues.

The paper has been posted on the bioRxiv preprint platform for the life sciences, but it has not yet undergone peer review.

Increased dengue cases are predicted.

In the meanwhile, dengue cases have increased nationwide, notably in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

The official statistics in Uttar Pradesh showed 24 fatalities so far on Wednesday. If the data from private hospitals is also included, the death toll would rise.

Additionally, the government expects an increase in the number of dengue cases with the approaching northeast monsoons, according to Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Thursday.

According to him, between 1,000 and 1,500 dengue cases are anticipated in November and December as a result of the northeast monsoon.

High fever, excruciating headaches, severe joint and muscular pain, rash, and bleeding tendencies are among dengue symptoms. Dengue hemorrhagic fever, which is characterized by severe instances, may cause plasma leakage and low platelet counts.
