 Elections in Chhattisgarh: The BJP issues a list of 64 candidates, with state president Arun Sao running from Lormi

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the state's main opposition party, published a list of 64 candidates hours after the Election Commission announced the dates for Chhattisgarh Assembly elections.

Arun Sao, the head of the BJP's state unit and candidate from the Lormi seat, is included on the list.

Sao, a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, has been overseeing BJP operations in Chhattisgarh since August of last year. In the House of Representatives, he represents the Bilaspur district.

The BJP first announced 21 candidates for the Chhattisgarh elections in August. Party officials have recently made suggestions that the leadership may include legislators in the ensuing lists.

"The party will provide tickets to state legislators. The party is considering offering tickets to at least six of our nine Chhattisgarh MPs. A top BJP official informed the Hindustan Times on September 29 that Vijay Baghel's name has already been announced on the first list.

In addition to Sao, the party is thinking of running Raipur MP Sunil Soni and Union minister Renuka Singh in the crucial Assembly elections, the BJP leader had previously said to the daily.

It is noteworthy that Chhattisgarh will hold elections in two stages on November 7 and November 17. The first round will have a total of 20 seats, while the second round will feature the remaining 70 seats. On December 3, the results will be made public.

The Congress was successful in overthrowing the BJP's 15-year hegemony at the most recent assembly elections in 2018. The latter was downsized to just 15 members in the 90-member Assembly under the direction of the then-chief minister Raman Singh. With 68 seats, the Congress swept to power, and Bhupesh Singh Baghel was sworn in as chief minister.
