Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, a senator from Pakistan, is appointed interim prime minister

Kakar is a member of the Baloch Awami Party, which is often seen as having ties to the Pakistani military.

On Saturday, August 12, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and opposition leader Raja Riaz reached an agreement to appoint Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar as interim leader to supervise elections, according to the Prime Minister's office. The nomination of Kakar was authorised by President Arif Alvi.

"We first agreed that whoever ought to become prime minister, he should be form a smaller province so that smaller provinces' complaints could be addressed," added Riaz, as reported by AFP.

Imran Khan, the former prime minister, would be unable to run in the general election after the parliament was dissolved on August 9. The election must take place within 90 days of the assembly's dissolution, per the regulations.
