Will disintegrate the country': Mizoram Assembly passes resolution against Uniform Civil Code

In December 2022, BJP MP Kirori Lal Meena introduced a private member's bill in Parliament to enact the UCC

Claiming that the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would disintegrate the country, Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana moved a resolution in the Legislative Assembly opposing any move to implement the UCC in the country. The House unanimously adopted the resolution moved by the Home Minister of the Mizo National Front government in the state.

The Home Minister said, "This House unanimously resolves to oppose any step taken or to be taken for the enactment of the UCC in India," and added that it would harm the religious and social practices, cultures and traditions of the minorities. will end

Moving the resolution, Lalchamliana said the UCC, if enacted, would "disintegrate the country as it was an attempt to end religious or social practices, customary laws, cultures and traditions of religious minorities."

The resolution assumes significance as Article 371G of the Constitution states that, no Act of Parliament with respect to the religious or social practices of the Mizos and Mizo customary law and procedure shall apply to the State unless the Legislative Assembly of the State of Mizoram therefore decides by a resolution.

The home minister said several attempts were made in the past to implement the Uniform Civil Code, but such attempts were not successful due to its "controversial nature".

In December 2022, BJP MP Kirori Lal Meena introduced a private member's bill in Parliament to implement the UCC.

Lalchamliana said, "The proposed law is pending in the Parliament. The proposed law aims to enforce a uniform code in the country by marginalizing or eliminating religious or social practices, customary laws, cultures and traditions of minorities."

"Though Mizoram has a special provision under Article 371G to protect its social or religious practices, customary laws and procedures, the implementation of the UCC is not healthy for India as a whole," he added.
