Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra to visit Bangladesh from February 15

 


The Ministry of External Affairs said Kwatra would visit Dhaka at the invitation of his Bangladeshi counterpart Masood bin Momen.

New Delhi: Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra will be on a two-day visit to Bangladesh from February 15 to review bilateral relations and identify new areas of cooperation.

The Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday that Kwatra would visit Dhaka at the invitation of his Bangladeshi counterpart Masood bin Momen.

During the visit, both the Foreign Secretaries will review the full range of bilateral relations including political and security, water, trade and investment, power and energy, defence, connectivity and sub-regional cooperation.

"The visit to Bangladesh is in line with the highest priority accorded to India's 'neighbourhood first' policy," the ministry said.

Bangladesh is India's top development partner and also its largest trading partner in the region.

The ministry said Kwatra's visit would "further strengthen bilateral relations and provide impetus to ongoing cooperation in various fields".

Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing economies in South Asia. Its trade with India has increased manifold making it India's largest trading partner in South Asia. Trade has grown from $9 billion to $18 billion in the last five years.

In the area of defense cooperation, the Bangladesh side has started procurement of military equipment under the $500 million Line of Credit.

The country also has the status of being India's fourth largest export destination, registering a growth of 66% from $9.69 billion in 2020-21 to $16.15 billion in 2021-22.
