Sridevi's film 'English Vinglish' to release in China

Sridevi's 2012 hit English Vinglish will release in China on February 24, 2023.

Indian films, which stopped screening in China due to political tensions and then the pandemic, are now available in cinemas across the country for movie-hungry Chinese fans.

In the last few months, Sushant Singh Rajput's Chhichhore released, followed by Tamil film Kaana and Ajay Devgn's Drishyam.

These older films, already widely available on streaming platforms, are being sent to China to fill the void left by its local film industry, which has been dormant of late. The Chinese film exhibition market has also suffered due to the closure of many cinemas. Indian producers found an opportunity even as the industry returned to normalcy.

Trade experts say it is clear that China, which has never been very generous in allowing foreign films to run in the country, is now facing a massive shutdown of cinemas and local cinemas have to be fed with new content. Used to be.

Releasing films in China can help Indian studios and producers in the long run, not only increasing popularity in the neighboring country but also providing a good opportunity to negotiate with Chinese distributors for better revenue-sharing terms. Is. Till now, Chinese theater owners and distributors used to pay producers only 25% of the box office collection of an Indian film.

The Chinese government controls the country's entertainment industry and only allows 34 international films to be screened annually – sometimes a few more. It sets the date of release, advertisement and number of theaters for screening. Trade experts said some of this could be renegotiated as the Chinese film exhibition business recovers from the pandemic.

To be sure, China releases are currently not delivering the kind of returns they used to before the pandemic. Chhichhore ended its run at the theaters with $3.01 million (Rs 22.52 crore).
