New British postage stamp featuring King Charles unveiled

New 'everyday' stamps featuring King Charles' image were unveiled for the first time on Wednesday, the latest item in Britain to get a makeover following the death of Queen Elizabeth.

Britain has been slowly introducing replacements featuring the new monarch since the death of his mother in September, from coins and banknotes to the official royal cipher used by the government.

In keeping with the tradition associated with the first Penny Black in 1840, the new "definitive" stamp uses an adapted version of the portrait of Charles also appearing on the new coin.

David Gould, director of foreign affairs and policy at the Royal Mail, said: "As with all stamps, they have been approved by the monarch and so we hope she is happy with the design."

"The guidance we were given was not to be too clever or try to go in a different direction, but to maintain that traditional image that we are all very much used to."

The new stamp, which will be available for general sale in early April, will feature only the king's head and its denomination on a plain colored background.

Gould said, "There is a precedent for the king not wearing a crown."

Charles is the seventh British monarch to appear on a definitive postage stamp. The Royal Mail said that existing stamps with Elizabeth's image would remain valid and in distribution until stocks ran out.
