Under India's G20 chairmanship, Gujarat is set to host the first Tourism Working Group meeting in the Rann of Kutch from February 7-9
As part of India's G20 chairmanship, Gujarat will host the first Tourism Working Group (TWG) meeting in the Rann of Kutch from February 7 to 9, the tourism ministry said in a statement.
Briefing the media in New Delhi, Union Tourism Secretary Arvind Singh said that there are 5 inter-related priority areas for tourism in G20. Accordingly, emphasis will be laid on these five priority areas viz. Greening the tourism sector, harnessing the power of digitization, empowering youth with skills, promoting tourism MSMEs/startups and rethinking the strategic management of destinations.
He further informed that side events on rural and archeological tourism will be organized to promote tourism during the first meeting of the Working Group. He also informed that during this time success stories of Indian tourism will also be shown to the foreign delegates.
The secretary revealed that one of the priorities through the G20 forum is to reach a consensus on how the SDG goals will be achieved by 2030. As part of this there will be an emphasis on sustainable tourism which is important not only for the environment but also for creating opportunities for local enterprise.
Singh said the G20 will help raise awareness about India's tourism potential globally as the delegates from the meetings at 55 different locations will be exposed to Indian culture and tourist destinations.
He also informed that the representatives of Rann of Kutch will be taken to Dholavira which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and through this people in our country and other countries will come to know about such places which will help in boosting tourism.
The secretary also said that improving the hospitality and management skills of the local population, especially the youth who will join the influx of tourists, is also an agenda. The same has been one of the major highlights of the budget for the financial year 2023-24.
He also mentioned that there would be a live demonstration of local arts and handicrafts before the delegates and parting gifts would be given to the delegates under One District One Product initiative.
Giving more information, Arvind Singh said that to take advantage of the G20 Presidency, 3 mega events related to tourism are being organized. These include the Global Investors Summit, the MICE Convention and the World Tourism CEOs Forum meeting in April. These are in addition to the G20 related events.
He also informed that a ministerial communiqué containing the direction agreed upon by various countries to move forward during the G20 meetings will be presented at the end of the summit. The different locations chosen for the G20 events would include different flavors such as rural, archaeological, historical etc.
