Explained: The Tamil Nadu vs Thamizhagam row that sparked a spat between CM Stalin and Gov RN Ravi

 


• On 4 January, Governor RN Ravi courted a controversy when he remarked that Thamizhagam would be more appropriate than Tamil Nadu to name the state.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Tamil Nadu government and Governor RN Ravi have been at loggerheads over the latter's Thamizhagam remarks. He said Dravidians follow regressive politics and they have been brought together on the basis of the Constitution.

Amidst the controversy between the governor and the Tamil Nadu government, various Dravidian political organizations have also condemned Governor Ravi.

Several posters with the words '#Getout Ravi' were seen in West Chennai's Valluvar Kottam and Anna Salai areas following the Governor's statement. Members of the ruling DMK and its allies Congress and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) started raising slogans against the governor before walking out of the assembly. DMK legislators raised slogans like 'Don't impose ideology of BJP, RSS'.

Speaking at a function held at the Raj Bhavan to honor the organizers and volunteers of the Kasi-Tamil Sangamam, he said, "Unfortunately there has been regressive politics in Tamil Nadu that we are Dravidians, and on the basis of the Constitution, we have been brought With. In half a century, every effort has been made to reinforce this narrative that we are not part of the nation, we are an integral part of the nation. At the event, he had said that there has been regressive politics with a 'bad habit' of rejecting everything that benefits all sections of people, including academics, claiming that the state is not an integral part of India. To that extent, Kasi Tamil Sangamam is the beginning of a power-packed journey towards national revival with everyone contributing to further spread its legacy.

In contrast, the BJP justified Ravi's remarks by saying that the term Thamizhagam is in common use in the state, and that the DMK was unnecessarily targeting him as he questioned the government on the NEET Bill.

DMK's organizing secretary RS Bharti says, "The governor is trying to do something that is not befitting of his governorship.

Ruling DMK's official mouthpiece 'Murasoli' on Saturday slammed Ravi for his alleged Tamizhgam remarks and asserted that nobody respects the Constitution and laws as much as Tamil Nadu does.

On Tuesday, workers of the Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (TPDK) protested and demanded removal of Governor Ravi from his post by the Centre, allegedly for skipping parts of his speech in the assembly and for the 'Tamizhagam' remark line. TPDK workers also burnt an effigy of the Governor in Coimbatore but were stopped by the police from doing so in Chennai.

Amidst the controversy between the governor and the Tamil Nadu government, various Dravidian political organizations have also condemned Governor Ravi.

On Monday, the Tamil Nadu Assembly also witnessed an unprecedented scene when Governor Ravi walked out in a huff after adopting a motion moved by CM Stalin, which, from the records of the House, was outside the customary government-prepared address whatever the Governor did. Soon after the Governor finished his speech, a motion to exclude a certain portion of the Governor's speech was adopted by the Assembly, prompting the Governor to hastily leave the House.
