The AAP alleged that Saxena appointed BJP leaders as aldermen who were not experts in civic issues.

On 5 January, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also wrote to the Delhi LG over the "unconstitutional" manner in which 10 aldermen were nominated to the MCD bypassing the Delhi government, saying it was a complete departure from established practice. In a related development, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia also wrote to the Commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Delhi, asking him to desist from taking any further action on the issue. Aldermen refers to people who are experts in their field. However, they do not have the right to vote in the mayoral election. 10 aldermen were nominated to the MCD before the election of the mayor. Kejriwal claimed that the nomination was done "completely bypassing the council of ministers of the democratically elected government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi".

The MCD House consists of 250 elected councillors. BJP's seven Lok Sabha MPs from Delhi and three Rajya Sabha MPs from AAP and 14 MLAs nominated by the Delhi Assembly Speaker will also participate in the election for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Six members of the Standing Committee will also be elected. The first municipal house after the high-stakes civic polls on December 4 is being held today when all newly elected councilors will take oath and the mayor and deputy mayor will be elected. AAP has fielded Shaili Oberoi and Ashu Thakur for the post of mayor. Rekha Gupta has been nominated by the BJP. Oberoi is the main contender of AAP.

AAP's Aale Mohammad Iqbal and Jalaj Kumar have fielded candidates for the post of deputy mayor. Kamal Bagri has been nominated from BJP for the post of Deputy Mayor.

The post of mayor in Delhi sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category, and the remaining two also in the open category.

Anil Chowdhary said that the Delhi unit of the Congress has unanimously decided not to support the Aam Aadmi Party or the BJP in the elections to the posts of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Leader of the House in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The councilors have decided not to take part in the voting.

Heavy police deployment has been made at the Civic Center building, MCD headquarters, where the meeting is underway.
