IMD said the annual mean land surface air temperature was 0.51 degree Celsius higher than the long-term average which is the mean temperature for the period 1981-2010.

The year 2022 was set to be the fifth warmest year for India since 1901, when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) began keeping weather records, the weather office said in an official statement on India's climate during the past year.

It added that the annual average land surface temperature was 0.51 degree Celsius higher than the long-term average, which is the mean temperature for the period 1981-2010, read the statement, as quoted by PTI.

However, it was lower than the highest temperature observed in India in 2016 when the average temperature was 0.71°C. During the 2022 winter season, the all-India mean temperature was normal with an anomaly of -0.04 °C.

The weather forecasting agency predicted on January 6 that cold wave and cold day conditions over northwest India may subside after 24 hours.

Further, the IMD has predicted that in the next 24 hours, dense to very dense fog conditions would prevail over many parts of Punjab and Haryana and Chandigarh. However, there may be a decrease in intensity and distribution thereafter.

Earlier on Friday, the IMD said that dense fog blanketed many parts of North India and the condition would persist in the coming weeks and cold wave conditions would prevail over Northwest India during the next 3 days i.e. till January 6 And after that the intensity will decrease.

Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 1.8 degrees Celsius on January 6 with Ayanagar in southwest Delhi recording the lowest temperature.

Meanwhile, Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 4.0 degrees Celsius and Delhi Ridge recorded 3.3 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of three degrees Celsius - the lowest in two years in January - making it cooler than many hill stations.
