New Delhi: The central government on Monday said that several steps have been taken to decongest the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in the national capital.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation VK Singh said that additional traffic marshals have been deployed at the departure area to avoid vehicular congestion. He said that to guide the passengers in advance, boards displaying the waiting time have been placed at the entry gate numbers.

Awareness posters have been put up at the entrance for passengers to be ready with their tickets or boarding passes and identity proof documents. Dedicated staff have been deployed to help the passengers. Two additional entry gates have been opened for the entry of passengers.

More security personnel, including the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), have been deployed at each of these gates – up to six per gate – to help with smooth scanning of tickets and IDs.

Other measures include deployment of additional X-ray machines for baggage screening, monitoring through CCTV and command centres, use of count meters for crowd management.

Airport operators have been advised to reduce flights at T3 during peak hours or shift them to the other two terminals, while airlines have been advised to deploy adequate manpower at all check-in/baggage drop counters. Air travelers have been encouraged to use DigiYatra, a biometric enabled seamless travel experience based on facial recognition technology. Airlines have also been asked to fully comply with barcodes on tickets issued to help smooth flow of passengers at entry/security gates.
