Coal production in India to reach one billion tonnes by next fiscal: Union Minister

The government informed the upper house of parliament on Monday that it plans to stop the import of thermal coal by 2024-25, and the country is aiming to produce one billion tonnes of coal in the next financial year, which This financial year ends in March. ,

Union Coal Minister Pralhad Joshi while replying to questions in Rajya Sabha said that India needs to increase its coal production as the domestic demand for coal is expected to reach 1500 million tonnes by 2030.

"As far as production is concerned, it was 566 million tonnes in FY14. This year our total production will be 900 million tonnes, which means all our PSUs are producing at optimum level," Joshi told Rajya Sabha.

The minister took a jibe at the previous government, which according to him was grappling with scams in the sector, while the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ensuring energy security for the country.

The government regularly monitors the operation of coal mines and their production levels.
