New Delhi: INS Mormugao, a P15B stealth guided missile destroyer, is to be commissioned to the Indian Navy by Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Sunday.
"The event marks the formal induction into the Navy of the second of the four 'Visakhapatnam' class destroyers indigenously designed by the Indian Navy's in-house organisation, Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai, Ministry of Defense said.
The warship has a length of 163 metres, breadth of 17 metres, and a displacement of 7,400 tonnes and can be considered as one of the most powerful warships built in India.
It is powered by four powerful gas turbines in a combined gas and gas (COGAG) configuration, capable of achieving speeds in excess of 30 knots. The ship has enhanced stealth features resulting in reduced Radar Cross Section (RCS).
The Defense Ministry said that INS Mormugao is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors such as surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles and is equipped with modern surveillance radar that provides target data. Ship's gunnery weapon system.

A unique feature of this ship is the high level of indigenization involved in the production of about 75%, which reinforces our national objective of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.
“Some of the major indigenous equipment/system at Mormugao include surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, torpedo tubes and launchers, anti-submarine rocket launchers, besides super rapid gun mounts, Combat Management System, Integrated Platform Management System, Includes Automated Power Management. system, foldable hangar doors, halo traversing system, close-in weapo n system and bow mounted sonar," the ministry said.
Major OEMs as well as smaller MSMEs like BEL, L&T, Godrej, Marine Electrical BrahMos, Tecnico, Kineco, Jeet & Jeet, Sushma Marine, Techno Process etc. have all contributed to building a mighty Mormugao.
With a clear focus on indigenization and self-reliance, 42 of the 44 ships and submarines under construction are being built at Indian shipyards, boosting the efforts for 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. In addition, AON has been awarded for 55 ships and submarines, all of which will be built in Indian shipyards.
Named after the historic port city of Goa, Mormugao coincidentally made its maiden voyage on 19 December 2021, when Goa celebrated 60 years of independence from Portuguese rule.
