Leo Varadkar was elected as Taoiseach by a margin of 87 votes to 62 and a margin of one vote. He received the seal of office from Michael D Higgins, the President of Ireland, according to news reports cited by ANI.

“Ireland has never been a failed state, and to claim that we are or that we were is perverse and dishonest. But we are failing some of our citizens, and this is essential to our success as a country that we fix it." Varadkar said after being elected as Taoiseach, as quoted by ANI citing The Irish Times.

With Varadkar taking over as Taoiseach of Ireland, Europe got its third Indian-origin head of government after Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Antonio Costa, Prime Minister of Portugal.
