Odisha: Police say no conspiracy in the death of 2 Russians

• Antonov allegedly threw himself from the second floor of a hotel in Rayagada on 24 December – two days after his friend Baydanov died of cardiac arrest

The death of two Russians in the same hotel in Odisha within a week, which deepened the mystery for the police, has now emerged that there is no conspiracy in the matter. According to a Hindustan Times report, the Odisha Police said that there does not seem to be any conspiracy in the death of Russian parliamentarian and businessman Pavel Antonov.

Antonov allegedly threw himself from the second floor of a hotel in Rayagada on 24 December – two days after his friend Baydanov died due to cardiac arrest.

He was critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Police said Antonov, 65, was found lying unconscious on the terrace of the first floor of an under-construction building next to Sai International Hotel in Rayagada.

Odisha Director General of Police Sunil Bansal said that the postmortem examination of Antonov and Bydanov has been completed and no foul play has been found in it.

Police said Bydanov died of a heart attack. Antonov most likely jumped from the roof terrace of the hotel.

However, the investigation is on. The district police are probing the exact cause of death, and the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) will assist the district police in the investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.

The hotel owner said that Antonov was "behaving strangely" after the death of his friend Bydanov from a heart attack on 22 December.

Kaushik Thakkar told Hindustan Times, "After coming to the hotel, Antonov and Baydanov had consumed heavy amounts of alcohol. On the morning of the 22nd, Baydanov died in his room after suffering a heart attack. He was taken to the cremation ground, clearly distraught. Since then he had stopped ordering food. On the morning of 24 December when our hotel staff did not find him in his room, they started looking for him and found him in a one-storey building. He was found lying unconscious on the roof of the hospital. After that we informed the police."

The two deceased and a Russian couple checked into the hotel on December 21 after traveling from Kandhamal district. The four Russians had reached Odisha from Delhi on December 18 and were planning to celebrate Antonov's 66th birthday at the hotel on December 22.

A tour guide who made arrangements for the Russian tourists said that they were carrying bottles of wine with them when they arrived on the afternoon of 21 December and bought more from the hotel bar.

The police are also questioning tour guides to understand why the tourists decided to celebrate Antov's birthday in Rayagada, Odisha.

Bydanov's body has been cremated, while Antonov's body is being preserved for further examination. The Russian couple (Mikhail Turov and Natalia Panasenko), who were at the hotel, have checked out.
