In another significant development from the state of Maharashtra, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday extended till December 27 the stay on its order granting bail to former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

He was granted bail by the court on December 12, but the court also said that the order will be effective in 10 days as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought more time to respond.

On Friday, the CBI moved the Supreme Court against the High Court order but the apex court adjourned the matter to January 2023. The agency asked the High Court to extend the stay till January 3, which was opposed by Deshmukh's counsel.

"Why should my liberty be curtailed for one more day when I have been granted bail after a full trial," argued Deshmukh's counsel Aniket Nikam.

The agency, which is arguing the matter through Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Anil Singh, then urged the court to grant a stay at least till December 27, to which the court agreed.

Granting bail to Deshmukh, the court noted that except for the statement of dismissed police officer Sachin Waze, none of the statements recorded by the CBI indicate that money was extorted from bar owners in Mumbai at the behest of the politician.
