Government asks metro rail corporations to register for carbon credits

New Delhi: The Union Housing and Urban Development Ministry has asked metro rail corporations in the country to register for carbon credits in line with the government's roadmap to achieve net zero carbon emission status.


The development comes after the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs suggested that the government should pressurize metro rail corporations to register for carbon credits. A carbon credit is a tradable permit or certificate that entitles the credit holder to emit one ton of carbon dioxide or another greenhouse gas equivalent.


A recent report by the committee outlining the action taken on the government's recommendations says the ministry has informed that registering for carbon credits for metro networks is only desirable, not a mandate.


The report quoted the ministry in its report to the panel as saying, "M/o Housing and Urban Affairs has requested Metro Rail Corporation, who have not yet registered for carbon credits, to address the economic benefits of registration." to put."


The committee has noted that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, being the nodal ministry for metro operations, can do a lot in this regard and allow the upcoming metros to register carbon credits aimed at reducing GHG (Green House Gas) emissions. can be persuaded to do so.


It added, "The committee, therefore, recommends the ministry to make GHG emissions mandatory for all upcoming metros, besides persuading metros to operate."

On the other hand, Pune and Mumbai Metro have only informed that their projects are under implementation and are silent on the issue of meeting power requirements from renewable energy.


According to the committee, since many metros are either using or planning to use renewable energy to a great extent to meet their requirements, the committee feels that it is important to ensure that all these metro rail networks Register for carbon credits so they can earn. The panel noted that since registration for carbon credits is not mandatory, many metro networks are yet to register for the same.
