Canada Express Entry 2023: Draw to target applicants in this region

IRCC will use the new authorizations to conduct Express Entry draws that invite candidates based on specific attributes rather than their overall CRS score.

Canadian immigration officials have made some changes to the Express Entry program, which will go into effect next year. Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that specific features will be considered for Express Entry draws from 2023.

According to the plan, Express Entry will target candidates based on their occupation, language and/or education to decide who will be granted permanent residence in Canada.

The Bill relating to the Update in the Express Entry Program (C-19) was passed by both the Houses of the Parliament on 23 June. 2023.

Currently, the Canadian Immigration Authorities are trying to locate Invitation to Apply (ITA) to conduct a targeted draw in the country. The IRCC says it will "consult a wide range of stakeholders to inform the new categories in Express Entry" to eventually decide on the details of the new format.

For example, the job vacancy rate in Canada's healthcare sector stood at 6% in October this year, therefore, the government is taking several measures to fill the positions. It is believed that the new Express Entry draw may target only healthcare professionals to reduce the job vacancy rate in the sector.

For now, IRCC will continue to conduct Express Entry draws as usual. That is, every two weeks, a certain number of Invitations to Apply (ITAs) will be given based on the CRS score.

CRS scores are based on factors such as age, official language proficiency, and Canadian work experience, etc. And, this process sometimes restricts the right type of candidate to obtain an ITA.

The Government of Canada is making changes to the Express Entry program due to workforce shortages due to an aging population and low birth rates. As per reports, it is expected that around nine million people in Canada will reach the retirement age by 2030.

Additionally, there are not enough young Canadians to fill positions in various companies, leading to an increasing number of job vacancies in the country. Canada relies on immigrants to maintain an ideal workforce in every sector and to keep its economy strong.

Canada plans to increase the admission of immigrants in the coming years. The Immigration Levels Plan 2023-2025, which was released recently, announced its target of welcoming 465,000 new immigrants in 2023. This will increase further as the country is likely to set a target of 485,000 new migrants in 2024 and 500,000 in 2025.
