Can the Apple Watch Predict Stress? Study claims device can do it accurately

• According to a report by 9to5Mac, a study has concluded that the watch's ECG sensor data can be used to develop a robust and accurate stress prediction tool. The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Waterloo, located in Canada.

Apple introduced electrical heart rate sensor with ECG app with Apple Watch Series 4. This feature can record your heartbeat and rhythm and then check the recording for atrial fibrillation (AFib), a form of irregular rhythm. Currently, the feature is available on the Apple Watch Series 4 as well as Series 5, Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, or Ultra.

According to a report in 9to5Mac, a study has concluded that the watch's ECG sensor data can be used to develop a robust and accurate stress prediction tool. The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Waterloo, located in Canada.

An ECG or electrocardiogram is a test that records the timing and strength of the electrical signals that make up the heartbeat. By looking at the ECG, a doctor can get information about your heart's rhythm and look for irregularities.

The report states that using the Apple Watch Series 6's ECG sensor, researchers found that there was a close correlation between ECG data, which included heart rate and deceleration potential, and participants' perceived stress levels when taking the readings. Was informed.

Using this data, machine learning algorithms were developed to build predictive models. It states that while the stress model is said to have a 'high degree of accuracy', it has low recall.

The study concluded that the Apple Watch has 'promising' potential for stress prediction. It has been suggested that as the device collects additional health information such as sleep and activity information, even more data points can be integrated into the stress model to refine the accuracy of predictions.

The research also speculated that the Apple Watch could also be used to aid in mental health care. It may offer activities such as breathing exercises to offset signs of stress and respond quickly to changes in mental health.

How to take ECG using Apple Watch

Before taking an ECG using Apple Watch, make sure that your Apple Watch is on and on the wrist that you have selected in the Apple Watch app.

Next, open the ECG app on your Apple Watch.

- Place your arms on the table or in your lap.

- With the hand opposite to your watch, place your finger on the Digital Crown. You do not need to press the Digital Crown during a session.

- Wait for recording. This usually takes 30 seconds.

- At the end of the recording, you will get a classification, then you can tap on Add Symptom and choose your symptoms.

- To note a symptom, tap Save, then tap Done.
