56% construction of Dedicated Freight Corridor completed: Vaishnav

The Dedicated Freight Corridors will offer higher transport output and carrying capacity due to faster transit of freight trains, running of double stack container trains and heavy haul trains, thereby significantly reducing the unit cost of freight transport.

New Delhi: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Friday said that out of the total sanctioned length of the Dedicated Freight Corridor, work on 1,610 km has been completed.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, the Minister said that the Ministry of Railways has started the construction of two Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFC) - Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) from Ludhiana to Sonnagar (1337 km) and Western. Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) to Dadri (1506 km).

Vaishnav said that the creation of the dedicated freight corridor would offer higher transport output and carrying capacity due to faster transit of freight trains, running of double stack container trains and heavy haul trains, thereby reducing the unit cost of freight transport significantly. "There will be savings in logistics costs."

He said that this would also improve the supply chain for the industries/logistics companies located in the catchment areas of DFC, thereby increasing the Exim traffic.

The Minister said that the benefits of DFC will boost industrial activities in the region by taking advantage of the industrial corridors/townships implemented along the DFC route. "The development of new freight terminals, multimodal logistics parks and inland container depots along both the Eastern and Western DFCs are in various stages of implementation."

The Dedicated Freight Corridor is meant to create a safe and efficient freight transport system in the country. Freight trains are not given priority over passenger trains. Once the corridor is completed, at least 70% of freight trains will be shifted to DFCCIL network, which will help in timely movement of cargo.
