Atal Bridge: Hourly limit on number of visitors after Morbi tragedy

 




Days after the bridge collapsed in Morbi, Ahmedabad's Atal Bridge has decided to limit the number of hourly visitors to 3,000.

The Ahmedabad civic body has decided to limit the number of people on the pedestrian-only Atal bridge over the Sabarmati river to 3,000 per hour in the wake of the bridge collapse in Morbi, in which 134 people died.

Explaining the decision, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation said in a statement, "Although the bridge is capable of carrying a load of around 12,000 people, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has decided to limit the number of visitors on the Atal bridge in view of the Morbi bridge tragedy. has decided,"

It said, “As a precaution, we have decided to limit the number of visitors on the Atal Bridge. Now, only 3,000 visitors will be allowed every hour. Not more than 3,000 persons are allowed to stand on the bridge per hour. will be given, and the rest will be asked to wait for their turn at the riverfront."

The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited said that the decision was taken for the safety of the visitors, though the bridge is very strong and safe as it has appealed for cooperation on the issue.

The Atal Bridge was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 27 August and was named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It is 300 meters long and 14 meters wide and connects the flower garden at the western end of the river and the visiting arts and culture center at the eastern end.

The iconic bridge with an eye-catching design and LED lighting is constructed using 2,600 tonnes of steel pipes, while the roof is made of colored fabric and the railing is made of glass and stainless steel.

The bridge is designed in such a way that people can reach it from both the lower and upper reaches or from the resorts of the riverfront. In addition to pedestrians, cyclists can use this bridge to cross the river without dealing with traffic, and enable users to view the riverbed from the middle of the water body.

The Machhu river bridge in Morbi, Gujarat collapsed when hundreds of people fell into the river due to a cable bridge.
