• At least 134 people, including women and children, were killed and over 100 were injured when a cable suspension bridge collapsed on the Machhu river in Morbi town on Sunday.
The Morbi Bridge, a colonial-era bridge over the Machhu River, was packed with spectators enjoying holiday festivities when it collapsed on Sunday evening, drowning people in about 10 meters (33 ft) of water. The more than a century old bridge over the Machhu river in Morbi, located about 300 km from state capital Gandhinagar, reopened five days ago after extensive repairs and renovations.

Gujarat Police has registered an FIR under IPC sections 304 and 308 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) in the bridge collapse incident. The Gujarat government has constituted a five-member committee to probe the bridge collapse incident.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel tweeted that state-wide mourning will be observed in Gujarat on November 2 for those killed in the Morbi tragedy. Patel said the decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Gandhinagar Raj Bhavan.
The Gujarat government has constituted a five-member committee to probe the bridge collapse incident.
Nine people, including officials of Orewa, the bridge repair company, ticket sellers and security personnel, have been arrested in connection with the Morbi bridge collapse.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday night chaired a meeting on the Morbi bridge collapse in Gujarat and asked officials to extend all possible help to those affected by the tragedy, officials said.
He said that in a meeting held at Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar, the Prime Minister, who is visiting Gujarat, was briefed about the relief and rescue operations at the accident site, about 300 km from the state capital.

CM gathered necessary information from the rescue team. He reached Morbi last night and has been conducting search and rescue operations since yesterday. He gave necessary guidance to the local administration.
