Mumbai Police has made seat belt mandatory for driver and co-passengers from 1st November 2022
• Mumbai Police in its notification said that whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carries passengers without a seat belt, will be punishable.
It is mandatory for all the passengers traveling in the car to wear seat belt from tomorrow i.e. 1st November 2022. On October 14, the Mumbai Police had issued a notification stating that it would be mandatory for the driver and co-passengers to wear seat belts from November 1, 2022. ,
In its notification, the Mumbai Police said that whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carrying passengers without a seat belt will be punishable.
The Mumbai Police had also said that a motor vehicle which does not have a seat belt facility will have to wear seat belts for all passengers. The due date for this was also fixed as November 1, 2022.
"All motor vehicle drivers and all passengers in vehicles who travel on Mumbai city roads are hereby informed that it will be mandatory for drivers and all passengers to wear seat belts while traveling with effect from 01/11/2022. Otherwise, action will be taken under section 194(b)(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019," read the notification.
In September, in a bid to intensify road safety rules, the Delhi Traffic Police had launched a special drive to encourage people to use rear seat belts, failing which they would have to pay a fine of ₹1,000.
The Union Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways had issued a draft rule making it mandatory for car manufacturers to install seat belt alarms on all seats of cars. Earlier in September, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that from now on it will be mandatory for all passengers in a car to wear seat belts, including those in the rear seats, and that violating the rule will be fined.
He also pointed out that the security alarms that usually beep when seat belts are not worn in the front seats will now be done the same for rare seat passengers. The Union Minister clarified that the new rule will be applicable to all types of cars, small and big.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari tweeted, "Now it will be mandatory for everyone in the car to wear a seat belt." He had also highlighted that there would be safety beeps for rare seats along with the front seats that would resonate if seatbelts were not worn.
His remarks came after the well-known industrialist and former Tata Sons chairman Mistry died in a road accident. Soon after the accident, there were reports of him not wearing the rare seat belt. According to Palghar police, Mistry was going from Ahmedabad to Mumbai when his car collided with the divider. There were four people in the car. Two including Mistry died on the spot, while the other two were admitted to the hospital.
Sources said Cyrus Mistry and others had left Udvada at 1:25 pm on Sunday and the accident happened around 2:28 pm. That's why he covered a distance of about 60 to 65 kilometers in 1 hour 2 minutes. Apart from Mistry, another deceased has been identified as Jehangir Dinsha Pandole. The injured Anayata Pandole and Darius Pandole were injured. The driver of the car in which Cyrus Mistry was traveling lost control due to high speed and hit the divider.
