• Kerch, a major bridge connecting the Russian mainland to the Crimean peninsula, was hit by a car bomb fire

Amid a strong counter-offensive by Ukraine against the invading Russian army, the Kerch Bridge, a major bridge connecting the Russian mainland to the Crimean peninsula, caught fire when a car bomb exploded. In the video of the blast site, some coaches of a train can be seen on the bridge surrounded by fire. Traffic came to a standstill on the bridge.

An explosion occurred early this morning on Russia's bridge from the Kerch Strait to Crimea.

The bridge is an important conduit for Russian supply routes into Ukraine and a great source of Putin's reputation. This is a very devastating blow.

President Vladimir Putin inaugurated the bridge in 2018, four years after Moscow annexed Crimea, with the goal of connecting the peninsula to Russia's transport network.

This 19-kilometre bridge spans the Kerch Strait and connects Crimea to the mainland of Russia. It is made up of railway and vehicle sections. In 2020, it will be fully operational.

"An object believed to be a fuel storage tank has caught fire on the Crimean Bridge, but there is no damage to the navigable arch of the viaduct," Oleg Kryuchkov, the head of Crimea, was quoted as saying by the Russian news agency TASS. a colleague said.

Russia's National Counter-Terrorism Committee said the bridge was damaged in an explosion just after 6:00 a.m. The vehicular section of the road partially collapsed due to the explosion. The explosion also caught fire in a goods train on the parallel railway section.

According to TASS, the head of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, a ferry service across the Kerch Strait will start later today.

Reports are also claiming that the bridge became the target of a retaliatory strike by Ukrainian forces, who have increased the intensity of their attack after Russia captured four areas of Ukraine.

After Russia's occupation of four regions of Ukraine- Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson, Ukraine is giving a tough time to Russian forces on every front. Since launching an offensive in Kherson late last month, the Ukrainian military has made steady progress, prompting rare criticism of Moscow's war effort even from pro-Russian figures.

"The Ukrainian army is making a rapid and powerful advance in the south of our country during the ongoing defensive operation," Zelensky said in his address.

"Our warriors do not stop. And it is only a matter of time before we drive out the occupier from all our land."
