Hyderabad :

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi or TRS has sought disqualification of BJP candidate Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy for the upcoming Munugode by-election, alleging that he entered the party after receiving a coal mining contract worth Rs 18,000 crore.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao-led TRS has alleged that Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy, the sitting Congress MLA from Munugode, joined the BJP after his family company got a contract worth Rs 18,000 crore from the central government.

Sri Reddy left the Congress and joined the BJP in August, leading to a by-election on 3 November.

A party delegation met Chief Electoral Officer Vikas Raj yesterday and made a representation seeking disqualification of Sri Reddy.

In a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer, the TRS legislators said that Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy had admitted during a TV interview that he had received a coal mining contract when he was with the Congress.

In a recent TV interview, Rajagopal Reddy had said that he had expressed his intention to join BJP three years ago, but recently he got the contract. He said his political decision to join the BJP had nothing to do with his business.

TRS working president KT Rama Rao or KTR tweeted the video clip on Saturday and said, "Quid pro quo - open confessional statement of BJP MLA candidate from Munugode. His company gets a huge contract worth Rs 18,000 crore and in return he Joins BJP. Probably so that his brothers, Congress MPs can follow in his footsteps."

KTR alleged that Rajagopal Reddy was chosen as the BJP candidate to contest the Munugode bypoll, as he had promised to spend Rs 500 crore on the election.

Rajagopal Reddy has threatened to file a defamation case against KTR for making "baseless allegations" against him.

In a tweet, Rajagopal Reddy said, "The time has come to call the spade a spade. I openly challenge Kalvakuntala Taraka Rama Rao. I am giving you 24 hours time. Either you charge against me." Prove that there is nexus or be prepared to face defamation."

BJP's Munugode campaign committee chairman G Vivek Venkataswamy also said there was nothing illegal about the contract awarded to Rajagopal Reddy's company as it was the lowest bidder for the global tender invited by Coal India.

He alleged that it was the TRS that looted the state and awarded many high priced coal mining contracts in the past.

The recent controversy comes days after Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao launched Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), a new version of his party, aspiring to a national role ahead of the 2024 elections.

Taking a dig at the Chief Minister, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that KCR was being guided by "tantriks" or tantriks. He alleged that he stopped going to the state secretariat and changed the name of his party on his advice.

"Chief Minister KCR stopped visiting the secretariat on the advice of tantriks, and did not even include women in his cabinet for many years. After failing and betraying the people of Telangana and Telugu language, he has now united the BRS as one. National party. The new party is doomed to fail," he said.

State BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar has also made similar allegations against KCR. He said the chief minister is performing "tantric puja" to win the upcoming elections.
