5G users will get speed equivalent to computers during launch phase: Experts
Mobile customers will get speeds of 600 megabits per second (Mbps) in the 5G network during the launch phase.
New Delhi:
According to industry players, mobile customers will get speeds of 600 megabits per second (Mbps) in 5G networks during the launch phase and the handset is expected to perform at par with professional computers for apps and data processing.
Reliance Jio has started offering 5G services to select customers in four cities - Delhi Mumbai, Kolkata and Varanasi - and parts of Bharti Airtel's eight cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Nagpur and Siliguri . -- For all customers with 5G handsets.
Customers of both the companies will not need to change the existing SIM to avail 5G services.
Jio has said that its customers will continue to take advantage of 5G services under the "beta trial" till the network coverage of a city is substantially covered.
The company has promised access to unlimited 5G data with speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second (GBPS). Industry players are of the opinion that this level of speed will be available very close to mobile stations.
"5G is expected to deliver up to 600 mbps (megabits per second) during the launch phase as traffic on the network will be less. However, it will remain in the range of 200-300 mbps after full roll out," said Ericsson Network Solutions, Strategic Thiawasheng Ng, head of network development, Southeast Asia, Oceania and India, told PTI.
This means that a two-hour high definition movie, which is typically around 6GB of file size, can be downloaded in 1 minute 25 seconds and a 4K movie can be downloaded in about 3 minutes at a top speed of 600 Mbps. can.
Customers buying a 5G handset or having a 5G-enabled handset will see the 5G option in their network settings and will have to select it to avail the service.
When 5G is available in their area, the mobile network display on their device will start showing 5G instead of 4G.
Former BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Srivastava said that the telecom operators are expected to provide free 5G service till the roll out and give them a taste of the new service.
"Once the roll out is done in a circle, telecom operators can announce their tariff plans and charge premium for 5G over 4G," Srivastava said.
Sanjay Malik, Senior Vice President and Head of India Market, Nokia, said the high speed in 5G will double the average data consumption per customer in India in a year and a half.
He said the tariff for 5G services varies from country to country.
"There are some countries which are not charging separately for 5G and there are others which are charging premium. The model for India will evolve on a business case basis here," Malik said.
The roll out of 5G is expected to bring down the cost of smartphones in India as well as make them work at par with workstations (professional computers).
Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon said the launch of 5G technology in India will help bring 5G devices to all different price points. "When we look at 5G growth opportunities in India, I see many and very significant opportunities. They can all happen at the same time. The first is India's scale in every single device at all different price points. 5G will bring technology," he said.
"5G will democratize computing power. If you have a 5G device, whether it's a phone or a computer, you want to run an application that requires a lot of computing power. 5G will provide that connection to the cloud (computer) Which allows you to tap into the cloud computing demand as if both were the same computer," Amon said.
Indian mobile phone company Lava has already announced the launch of a 5G smartphone, LavaBlaze 5G, in the price range of ₹10,000 around Diwali, which will be the cheapest phone to support 5G services across all spectrum bands, which will be used by telecom operator Signal. to broadcast. in India.
Sunil Raina, President and Business Head, Lava International, said, “5G will accelerate digital empowerment in India, and affordable devices will be a key enabler. New low-latency based use cases are expected to emerge, as well as existing cases. To accelerate." Told.
High-speed data consumption on mobile phones is expected to drain the battery quickly. Keeping this in mind, many mobile phone companies have started coming up with fast charging features along with batteries of 5,000 mAh and above.
“The power consumption of mobile devices will increase with 5G usage as more cloud based applications like gaming start rolling out. Luckily we already have a high capacity battery with fast charging available. Personally, I think consumer Smartphones that charge 50 watts and above will appreciate this. "It will help them refill the battery quickly," said Faisal Kawoosa, chief analyst at market research and analysis firm TechArc.
He said there is every possibility to eventually see 'light' or 'thin' smartphones like thin client laptops as the computers will be primarily in the cloud.
"This could mean an affordable range of smartphones. However, to support other specifications such as 4K video, ultra rich graphics, etc., chipsets that enable such features will still be in demand," Kavosa said.
The Ericsson Mobility Report of June 2022 also confirms that 5G is growing faster than all previous mobile technology generations.
The report states that 5G is expected to account for about 40 percent of all subscriptions in India by 2027.
5G services will progressively cover the entire country over the next few years - Jio has promised to do so by December 2023 and Bharti Airtel by March 2024.
