In a major setback to the Janata Dal-United (JDU), a total of 15 panchayat members of Nitish Kumar's party in Daman and Diu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. The development comes after some JD(U) leaders in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh quit the party and joined the BJP a few days back.
15 out of 17 JD(U) district panchayat members from Daman and Diu and the entire state JD(U) unit today joined the BJP, protesting Nitish Kumar's decision to quit the BJP which has spurred development in Bihar and opted for 'Bahubali'. Furthermore, a dynastic party," tweeted the BJP.
Five MLAs of the party have joined the ruling BJP earlier this month. The JD(U) MLAs who joined the BJP are Kh Joykishan, N Sanate, Mohd Achab Uddin, previous DGP LM Khoute and Thanjam Arunkumar. Presently, JD(U's) Muhammad Abdul Nasir is the party's solitary MLA in Manipur. Nasir had won the Lilong seat this year.
The JD(U) had won six of the 38 seats in the get together decisions held in Spring this year. Whereas, the BJP secured a majority in 32 seats in the 60-member state assembly.
Before Manipur, the lone JD(U) MLA from Arunachal Pradesh had also joined the saffron party on August 25 this year in the presence of National President JP Nadda and Arunachal CM Pema Khandu.
With the consolidation of JD(U) MLA Techi Kaso with the BJP, the BJP is remaining on 49 out of 60 gathering seats (MLAs). 8 out of 9 JDU councilors have joined BJP; Now the total BJP councilors are 18 out of 20.
The major political event came at a time when relations between Kumar and the BJP fell to a new low as the former formed a new government in Bihar in alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
