The guy moved toward the rear of the building, making the snipers report his movements until he vanished again and reappeared with a rucksack. It's thought he gained access to the roof by using an air conditioner. According to CBS News, the suspect had ascended to the roof and positioned himself behind and above the snipers inside the building by the time backup cops arrived.


Upon hearing the sniper's call, two other policemen attempted to scale the roof. According to the officer, Crooks had already been slain by a Secret Service sniper before state police arrived on the site.
