Manipur ko nyay do is chanted by the opposition while PM Modi speaks about "Viksit Bharat" in the Lok Sabha

More than 60,000 people have been displaced and killed in the ethnic warfare between the Kuki-Zo group and the majority Meitei community since May 3, 2023. These individuals are currently either living in camps around the State or have fled outside of Manipur.

New Delhi: After attending the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) parliamentary party meeting at the Parliament building in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah depart.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the floor in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday to deliver his maiden speech as leader of the Opposition for a third consecutive term, they sang "Manipur ko nyay do" (Do justice) in unison. For more than a year, the Meitei and Kuki communities of Manipur have been engaged in ethnic warfare against one other.

The opposition coalition in India has expressed outrage at PM Modi's purported quiet about the ethnic violence occurring in Manipur. Around 220 individuals have died as a result of the ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo group and the majority Meitei population since May 3, 2023. Over 60,000 people have also been displaced and are either living in camps across the State or have fled outside of Manipur.

Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla chastised the opposition, saying, "Ye tareeqa nahi hota hai."

In the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to a motion of thanks about the President's Address.

Prime Minister Modi stated: "A number of Members of Parliament, particularly those who are new to the Parliament, have shared their opinions on the President's speech both yesterday and today. Despite being new to the House, they behaved like seasoned lawmakers and adhered to all the procedures of the legislature. Their opinions have added value to the discussion and elevated the House's dignity."

The comments made by PM Modi seemed to be a jab at the opposition members of parliament. Notably, PM Modi's speech was muffled in the Lok Sabha by the deafening clamor of "Manipur ko Nyay Do."

The opposition has also been calling for a discussion on the current NEET 2024 test scandal, which has caused several candidates' futures to be shattered due to widespread paper leaks and exam cancellations.
