"Ukraine strikes Russian missile launch sites."

After Ukrainian fire struck Russian missile launchers shelling the city of Kharkiv, the mayor of that city said that things had become "calmer."

Nearly two weeks had passed since the US and other Western countries granted Ukraine permission to strike targets inside Russia close to Kharkiv. At that time, Ihor Terekhov made his remarks. He was addressing a gathering in Germany that President Volodymyr Zelensky was a part of, with the intention of persuading European countries to support and invest in Ukraine. As part of its ongoing attack that started in May, Russia claims to have taken control of two villages in Ukraine.

According to the ministry of defense, its troops had gained control of Tymkivka in the Kharkiv area and Miasozharivka in the Luhansk region. Ukraine has not offered a statement. On Monday, however, Mr. Zelensky said that Ukraine was still engaged in "counter-strike activities" in the Kharkiv area. Along with denying any Russian involvement in the area, he refuted claims made by pro-Russian Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov that his soldiers had taken control of a hamlet in the Sumy region, which borders Russia to the west of Kharkiv.

Four of the five fatalities attributed to Russian bombing in the last 24 hours have occurred in the Kharkiv area, according to Ukrainian authorities. While shelling of Kharkiv has increased in frequency over the last two days, overall conditions have been calmer, according to Mr. Terekhov. "There has been a break in the shelling, which I think is connected without the fact that the equipment that Kharkiv was being shelled with has been properly hit," he told the news agency Reuters.

"Compared to May, we had a very quiet week up until Sunday. As a result, things have been somewhat quieter, albeit not entirely so." At the German meeting, Mr. Zelensky has been advocating for more air defense systems to thwart Russian strikes. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany was providing more air defenses, including a third Patriot system, and missiles to assist Ukraine while speaking beside the president of Ukraine.

US authorities said at the end of May that President Joe Biden had given Ukraine permission to attack targets in Russia using weaponry provided by the US, but only in the vicinity of the Kharkiv area. Due to its proximity to the Russian border, Kharkiv is vulnerable to internal Russian attacks. Prior to now, Western countries have limited the weaponry they supplied to Russian-held regions of Ukraine due to concerns that striking Russia directly would cause the crisis to worsen.
